Booked your skip? Great! But are you ready for it? Improper prep can lead to delivery delays, extra fees, or even missed collections. Here’s how to make sure everything goes smoothly from the moment your skip arrives.
Measure Your Space
Before booking, check that your space can actually fit the skip:
• A typical skip lorry is at least 2.5m wide
• Allow for 3m+ clearance width and overhead space• The skip itself needs about 3–5m length, depending on the size
- Make sure the ground is firm, flat, and clear of obstacles
Clear the Area
Remove:
• Vehicles
• Bins
• Bikes, toys, or debris
Make sure there’s enough room for the lorry to reverse in safely and quickly. If your skip will go on a driveway, it must:
• Be level (avoid slopes)
• Handle heavy weight (~1.5 tonnes+)
• Have no low-hanging branches or cables
Public Land? Get a Permit
If your skip will be placed on a road, footpath, or verge, you’ll likely need a council permit. Some Irish counties require:
• Reflective markings
• Nighttime lighting
• A site plan
Be Home or Notify Your Neighbours
While you don’t always need to be home for delivery, it helps if:
• There’s gated access
• It’s a tight spot
• You need the skip placed in a very specific area
Let neighbours know in advance if the lorry may temporarily block access.
Bonus Tips
• Lay down old plywood if you’re concerned about driveway scratches
• Don’t move the skip after delivery (safety + permit issues)
• Fill evenly, and never above the “Max Fill†line
